With the end of the year upon us, and internships wrapping up many of you are wondering about next steps...
Applying for Teaching License: You may apply to the State of Ohio for your teaching license even before you complete all of your program requirements (e.g., course work, Praxis II examinations, FBI check, BCI check, TB check, internship experience, edTPA, student teaching).
As you have done throughout your teacher preparation program, go to the Office of Assessment and Continuous Improvement web site:
If you have additional questions regarding the application process, do not hesitate to contact Chet Laine or the Licensure Office at 513-556-0297.
Praxis II: PRAXIS going away in August 2013. Pearson has won state procurement for teacher licensure tests. If you have not taken your Praxis II tests, information can be found on the ETS PRAXIS II Website for Ohio: http://www.ets.org/praxis/oh. For example, as candidates seeking an Ohio Adolescent to Young Adult Integrated English Language Arts (grades 7 to 12) teaching license, you must take two Praxis II tests:
Principles of Learning and Teaching test, Grades 7 to 12 [Test Code: 30524]
English Language, Literature & Composition: Content Knowledge [Test Code: 10041]
You will have a test to ensure you understand the principles of Learning and Teaching and one in your content area.
The CECH Library has materials online to assist you with the Praxis http://guides.libraries.uc.edu/PRAXIS_Tests
Robert Armstrong, San Antonio Christian High School, San Antonio, TX Mr. Armstrong explains that you need to be aware of the credentials necessary for the states where you are applying. Public schools have specific criteria that have to be met, to qualify for an out of state license you will need to check each state's criteria. Private schools have specific qualifications that may be different than the public schools. Generally private education does not follow all the state specifications but each school will have it's own qualifications for employment.
Karen Haring, Internship Coordinator, University of Cincinnati CECH, Cincinnati OH Karen shares information explaining the Praxis for Middle Childhood education involves 3 separate tests. Two that show you understand the content you will teach and the third is Principles of Teaching and Learning which tests on your understanding of pedagogy. Preparation... "come to class!" Your program will get you ready. If you have test anxiety you may want to get a study guide and work on studying for the tests. Most candidates do just fine!
Below is a transcript regarding the new Internship Program launched in CECH in 2011.
